Network security cameras are more commonly called IP cameras. Most but not all IP cameras are HD or high definition. An IP or network camera is like a mini computer. It has all the features or a computer with an interface that can be accessed and configured as desired.
These Network Cameras come in a variety of shapes, styles, quality and features. Some lower cost models come with 2 way audio and are excellent choices for Nanny cams, baby monitors or home security. Under $100 these cameras are economical and easy to use. They easily synch up with your smart phone and allow you to watch and listen to the room in which they are installed. Be aware of eavesdropping laws in your jurisdiction when using these cameras.
Professional security cameras are made for heavier usage and are often equipped with outdoor, vandal resistant enclosures and may not have a microphone. These cameras are often times ONVIF compliant meaning they can be used on a variety of NVR (Network Video Recorders) to professionally record the video captured. They may also have on board SD cards allowing for backup recording in the event that your network stops working as well as remote recording capabilities.
While the features of IP cameras are plentiful, the main features are very exciting compared to basic cameras. Here are the top 5 reasons to consider Network IP cameras for your High Definition HD Security Cameras:
1. Highest Definition: While competing HD technologies such as HD over coax and all of its forms (AHD, TVI, CVI & SDI) offer High Definition up to 2.1 Megapixels, IP Megapixel Cameras offer 5, 10 even 16 megapixel cameras. While the norm is between 1 and 5 megapixels, the possibility for higher exists where it is not possible with HD over coaxial. This gives you the potential to zoom in without pixelation or distortion after recording to a much higher degree than the HD over coaxial security cameras.
2. Remote Recording: IP cameras have the unique capability of recording anywhere in the world. You can install an IP camera at your home and record it remotely through the Internet at a remote location. This prevents any sabotage of the recorder on the camera site which is a possibility if the bad guy knows your video surveillance system is recording.
3. Wireless Capability: I know everyone has seen wireless cameras. But the typical wireless camera is very limited in terms of quality and distance. New digital wireless camera technology has improved the quality but the distance is still relatively short. Now comes the IP Network camera with all of its capabilities. With a wireless AP device you can send your IP camera video signal miles away to another location.
4. Low Cost Wiring: In most cases, the CAT5 wire required for IP cameras is cheaper than the coaxial cable required for other types of cameras. If you use wireless IP cameras (see #3), you can even run camera signals miles without a wire, not including the wire attached from the camera to the transmitter and receiver to the recording network. In some cases you can simply connect to your wireless or wireless network to avoid all wires.
5. Multiple Cameras in Software: With IP cameras, you can increase the number of cameras as you go without having to change your DVR. The IP camera comes with recording software with most of the manufacturers cameras. So whether you have one or 20 cameras, the same software can be used. You may need to increase the processing power of the computer but the software will not need to be changed. GeoVision, a leading manufacturer of high quality Network IP cameras offers free 32 camera (channel) software which is robust and full of professional grade features. If you exceed the 32 cameras, you can always purchase their 64 channel NVR software for about $600. But if that was the case, I may recommend that you simply get a second NVR and use the 32 channel free software for your additional cameras.
So I promised 5 reasons but I would be remiss if I did not mention the 360 degree camera. Many manufacturers including GeoVision is offering 180 or 360 degree cameras with excellent dewarping software. You almost need to see this software and camera in action to understand and appreciate the way this works. The camera has no moving parts yet sees in all directions and is able to provide the same visual perspective as a stationary camera.
So as you can see video surveillance cameras are excellent but Network Security cameras have their big advantages. Whether the security cameras are for home video surveillance systems or business, IP or Network Security Cameras are an excellent and flexible choice for HD Security Cameras and video security systems.
