How to Secure Your Home on a Low Budget

Home Security

Building a home involves time and money. Both of these are important and you would not want a home intrusion. Getting a full-fledged home security system can be a tad bit expensive, especially if you have a low budget, but there is no need to worry. Financial constraints won’t keep you from securing your home. Just follow these tips to secure your home on a low budget:

Deception

The thing about intruders and thieves is that they never want to get caught in the act. If they are targeting your home, then they will keep an eye on your activities. Make sure that you leave a few lights on before leaving the house to create a deception that the house is not empty. Also consider putting up a dog sign just in case someone decides to walk in when you least expect.

Replace the Locks

If you have moved into a new home, then it is better to have the locks changed. Make sure that you change all the locks and this includes the ones at the entrances, windows, rooms and any other place that has a lock. Apart from the obvious security concern that the old locks might be easier to pick or access due to the availability of duplicate keys, there is also the possibility of the locks becoming rusted and weak. Changing the locks will not cost as much as bearing with financial loss arising out of thefts.

Know Your Neighborhood

Even if you do not socialize, it is always better to know your neighborhood to discourage thefts and intrusions. Deception works at the initial stages, but if a thief gets bold enough to infiltrate your home, then your neighbors are the best security measures that you can rely on. Get involved in the community and make friends with those around you. If a situation occurs, you neighbors will act as the first line of defense or vigilance.

Check for Weak Spots

Check out every nook and corner of your house to identify weak spots. These include worn out walls, backdoors, access from the roofs, loose windows and just about any place that can be used by thieves to get into your house. Fix up broken sections and reinforce places that are most prone to an intrusion. This should help you to deter intrusion attempts to a great extent.

Get Surveillance Camera Systems for Your Home

A full-fledged home security system might be tough on your pocket, but you can always get surveillance camera systems for your home. Ask an expert about the best angles at which the camera(s) may be aligned to cover as much area of the house as possible. Depending on your requirement and the camera type that you are looking for, you should be able to get a video surveillance system for your home within affordable limits.

Strengthen Your Home’s Perimeter

Once you have ensured security measures in your home, you need to focus on the perimeter. This is the first line of defense of your home and once it is infiltrated, your home is at a greater risk. Add barbed wires or fences to ward of hopeful thieves. Also, make sure that you keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

Protect the Security Measures

Your security measures will be of no use if they are themselves prone to damage. Once you have set up the security measures, you need to protect them and see to it that they are in proper working order. This will help you to keep security levels high for your home.

Be Vigilant

Without vigilance, you cannot expect the security measures to work. You need to be alert at all times and act fast on the first sign of intrusion. If you discover the signs late, then there is a possibility that a lot of damage has already been done. Make sure that you and your family members are vigilant for suspicious activities not only in and around your home, but also in the neighborhood.
